Boca Raton – Lt. Jamie Smith of Boca Raton Fire Rescue was off duty and working out at a fitness center last Jan. 26 when a 39-year-old man appeared to be having a seizure.

Smith rushed to his aid and discovered the man was not breathing and had no pulse. He resuscitated the man and contacted paramedics on duty. The man was taken to the hospital, where he underwent successful triple coronary bypass surgery.

As a result of Smith's calm action and controlled leadership of the situation, he recently was named 2008 Paramedic of the Year by Boca Fire Rescue, which acknowledged the life-saving incident as well as Smith's years of dedicated service to the department.

Smith also is involved in the department's EMS education, competitions and new employee training.
